3 Truths to make lasting change.

After 19 failed attempts to improve my life, I stopped counting. Because few of the changes worked. Nothing was improving. All that really changed was the scenery. Once I got to the point of realizing that something had to evolve or I was in serious trouble, I realized what I was doing wrong.

#1 You realize something has to give. You can’t keep going the way you are. For me, it was thinking if this is how the rest of my life is going to be, working dead end 9-5 gigs where I’d want to spend my time off still in my pajamas, I’d be in immense trouble. I was so drained I didn’t want to get out of bed. It took Herculean efforts to kick the covers off in the morning. There were days I grumbled profanities as the sun peaked through the window blinds.

#2 The actual work. Reflecting on the bad choices you made. Making the decisions you did based at the information you had at the time. Even if it’s only for yourself. Work about stuff you don’t want to think about, never mind admit to anyone. And unless there’s trauma involved, you don’t have to admit any wrong doing to anyone.

Those twinges of something you can’t name, could be guilt or remorse. The first step to addressing the problem is admitting there is one.

The only person you really have to admit any fault to is yourself. Why? Because at the end of the day, the only person you have to live with is you. You have to be able to look yourself in the mirror.

It’s not magic. There’s no secret formula, or quick fix. Just determination, decisions made and action taken.

#3 Start small. “Go big or go home,” works for the NBA. For the rest of us, it’s setup for failure.

Start with a one day without hitting the snooze button, one push-up, looking at yourself in the mirror while practicing your speech.

You can still dream to the stars. Small wins build momentum. Momentum builds confidence. Confidence builds you the life you want.

The stars are still there. Just take the steps instead of jumping.
