September is national suicide prevention month. This post contains talk about suicide. Which is something we need to stop stigmatizing and start talking about to learn about and why people are thinking about.
If you have friends talking about or partaking in risky behavior like self-harm, if you are thinking about self-harm and in the United States, please call 988.
Someone will miss you. I promise. Your friend and family just don’t know how to help.
You are valuable.
Your pain is real and valid.
Your family and friend won’t know what to say to you.
They can also reach out for help.
What prompted this piece was reading about a tragic couple homicide- suicide cases and a single case of suicide. (The first two incidents happened in my stomping grounds of Northeast Ohio.) In one of the tragic homicide-suicide the assailant had a history of telling people how he wanted to die. Spoiler alert. It is how he died before taking the life of an innocent young woman. (2)

This happens entirely far too often and more preventative measures need to be taken. Like by not stigmatized people for talking about and tending to their mental health. If a friend of yours says they are going to or want commit suicide, don’t call them “dramatic” or say something like, “Don’t say that. You don’t mean it.” Take them to get some help. Call 988.
